Hebden Bridge stands in a valley surrounded by steep hill sides. Until the industrial revolution most people actually lived up on the top of the hill.
Situated where a pack horse bridge crossed the River, Hebden Bridge turned out to be ideally situated to build water powered mills. As the name implies this mill is situated near to the bridge and it was a textile mill. Originally the mill was powered by a water wheel and then later converted to steam power.
The mill still has the mill chimney and until 2012 still had a working water wheel. At the time of my visit work was under way to install a new water wheel. This time it will generate electricity for the businesses in the building rather than provide power to drive machinery.
In 1984 the mill was made an English Heritage
Grade II Listed Building.
