Snowmobilers travel from all over to use the trails in the Marquette area of the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. In winter the lake effect snows kick in early - and often - to create some of the best opportunities for snowmobilers and other snow enthusiasts.
Along the railroad line near Hwy 28, there is a trail used mostly by snowmobiles in winter, here you will find a sturdy lean-to built by Tom Lakenen. The shelter is equipped with fire wood, wood stove, fire pit, grill, coffee, snacks, and "facilities" for all visitors to use as needed. It is free to use, a log book is available to sign, and a place to post your messages and pictures also. A donation "tank" is located at the site, donations are accepted but not required.
Tom Lakenen is a retired welder who built a sculpture garden (Waymark Code: WM1Z42) that you can hike thru, drive thru, and in the winter, snowmobile thru. During summer the shelter is accessible from the highway but in winter only from the trail system.
