The following details are from the museum website.

"Saddleworth Museum and Art Gallery is a small community museum located in the heart of Saddleworth. Situated in one of the out buildings of a nineteenth century Victorian Mill (the only part of the mill to survive), it stands in an historic and beautiful location beside the Huddersfield Narrow Canal in the village of Uppermill.

The museum has something to appeal to all ages, with activities and exhibitions which the whole family will enjoy. Look out for our family friendly boxes, museum quiz or try one of our Boredom Buster craft sessions during the holidays.

The gallery’s exhibitions make use of material stored in their archives and are both fun and educational. Explore the history, landscape and people of Saddleworth. Particularly popular with children, visit the interior of an eighteenth century weaver’s cottage, a Victorian house and a shop window with changing displays.

The Textile Gallery has working machinery showing the weaving process from mule to Dobcross Loom. On the museum’s textile working days you can hear and smell the textile machinery in action, and talk to their volunteers about life and work in the mills.

The transport and Communications Gallery shows the Tame Valley as a vital transport link between Yorkshire and Lancashire from Roman times, to the canals, railways and the famous Standedge Tunnel. There are also bicycles, vintage cars and motorcycles on display.

The museum has an energetic education service which provides National Curriculum based workshops for school children aged between 4 and 14.

The shop sells a wide range of books, CD’s, maps, gifts and souvenirs. Pop in for a warm welcome.

A small charge applies for entry to the Museum and for craft sessions. Open daily, Mon-Sat 10am to 4pm and Sundays 12am to 4pm.

A trip to Saddleworth Museum gives families the chance to explore the village of Uppermill too. With the stepping stones and play area at Uppermill Park, independent cafes and tearooms, boutiques, toy and gift shops just a few minutes walk away. Pick up a copy of the Uppermill Village trail leaflet from the Museum shop or take a stroll down the canal into the village centre.
