Das sogenannte Alte Schloß wurde 1586-1608 im Stil der Renaissance für die Amtsleute der Mainzer Erzbischöfe anstelle einer kurmainzischen Zollburg aus dem 14. Jahrhundert erbaut. Der gotische Burgfried, der Mauerring um das Schloss und der trockengelegte Wassergraben zeugen jedoch bis heute von der Struktur der alten Zollburg. Der Palas und damit der Hauptteil des Bauwerks wurde während des Dreißigjährigen Krieges im Januar 1635 durch die Truppen Bernhards von Sachsen-Weimar niedergebrannt und nicht wieder aufgebaut. Vom großen Palas blieb lediglich der Gewölbekeller erhalten.
Am repräsentative Torhaus im Osten erkennt man die Trennung der Fassade in zwei Stockwerke. Im unteren Stockwerk herrscht die dorische Säulenordnung. Der Fries enthält das Bild des Heiligen Martin. Im zweiten Stockwerk dominiert dagegen die ionische Säulenordnung. Die Bauelemente sind durch prunkvolle Bemalung und Vergoldung voneinander getrennt.
Das Hauptgebäude des Schlosses verfügt über einen rechteckigen Grundriss, an dessen nordöstlicher Ecke sich ein niedriger runder Turm anschließt mit einer glockenförmigen Haube im Baustil der Renaissance. Im südwestlichen Teil des Hauptgebäudes ist der gotische Bergfried mit barocker Haube aus dem Jahre 1681. Auf der nördlichen und der südlichen Seite dominiert der charakteristische Renaissance-Giebel des Daches.

The so-called Altes Schloß (Old Castle) was build 1586-1608 in Renaissance style for the officers of the archbishops of Mainz instead of a 14th century toll castle of the Electorate of Mainz . The Gothic castle tower, the boundary wall around the castle and the drained moat testify today of the structure of the old toll castle. The palas, and thus the main part of the building, was burnt by troops of Bernard of Saxe-Weimar during the Thirty Years War in January 1635 and was not rebuilt. From the great palas remains only the vault cellar.
At the representative gatehouse to the east, you can see the separation of the façade into two floors. On the lower floor there is the Doric order. The frieze contains the image of St. Martin. On the second floor, however dominates the Ionic order. The components are separated from one another by magnificent painting and gilding.
The main building of the castle has a rectangular base, at the north-east corner is a low round tower with a bell-shaped dome in the style of the Renaissance. In the south-western part of the main building is the Gothic castle keep with a baroque dome from the 1681. The northern and the southern parts are dominated by the characteristic Renaissance roof gables.
