"Biografia
Ficou célebre por ter conseguido, no comando do caça-minas NRP Augusto de Castilho, proteger o vapor São Miguel de ser afundado pelo submarino alemão U-139, comandado pelo ás dos ases dos submarinos Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière, em 14 de Outubro de 1918.
Passou a infância na cidade de Vila Real, apesar de ter nascido na freguesia de São Nicolau, no Porto, onde seus pais José de Carvalho Araújo, Jr. e Margarida Ferreira Botelho de Araújo, se encontravam por motivo de doença de sua avó materna, Margarida Rosa de Jesus Botelho.
Após ingressar na Marinha, serviu na fragata "D. Afonso", na corveta "Duque da Terceira", no couraçado Vasco da Gama, nos cruzadores Adamastor e São Rafael, nas canhoneiras "Zambeze", "Liberal", "Diu" e "Lúrio", no rebocador "Bérrio" e no transporte "Salvador Correia".
Foi Deputado por Vila Real à Assembleia Constituinte da República, e Governador do Distrito de Inhambane, em Moçambique, por dezoito meses.

"He was famous for having succeeded in command of the minesweeper NRP Augusto de Castilho, protect the São Miguel steam to be sunk by German submarine U-139commanded by the ace of aces of submarines Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière on 14 October , 1918.
He spent his childhood in the town of Vila Real, despite being born in the parish of St. Nicholas, in Oporto, where his parents José Araújo de Carvalho, Jr. and Margarida Botelho Ferreira de Araujo, were due to illness of his maternal grandmother, Margarida Rosa de Jesus Botelho.
After joining the Navy, served on the frigate "Alfonso", the corvette "Duke of Terceira," in the "Vasco da Gama" battleship, in "Northwind " and "San Rafael" cruisers, the gunboats "Zambezi", "Liberal", "Diu" and "Lurio, the tug "Berrio" and transport "Salvador Correia".
He was a Member to the Constituent Assembly of the Republic of Vila Real, and District Governor of Inhambane, Mozambique, for eighteen months."
