One of the visitors on a tour of the Plummer Relish factory wanders off, gets crushed by a fork lift truck, and ends up naked in the sterilisation plant. The dead man, Dexter Lockwood, is a brand executive of a rival company, Fieldway Foods.

Plummer’s is a failing company that ought to be taken over, but Ralph Plummer, with the aid of his mother, Amelia, blocks the takeover, much to the annoyance of the other members of the family. Perhaps Ralph is a suspect. The other two siblings, Anselm and Caro, are trying to get an Enduring Power of Attorney over Amelia to get her voting rights.

Meanwhile Amelia Plummer is being frightened by someone hanging a dummy in a tree in front of her kitchen window. Barnaby and Scott find that the hanging dummy is probably real, as there are grooves caused by the rope in the tree branch. Whilst Barnaby interviews Dexter’s father, Scott finds the dummy and some Plummer files in the father’s dustbin. The father admits that he and Dexter had been trying to frighten Amelia. It turns out that the father has an Enduring Power of Attorney over Amelia.

Amelia admits to Barnaby that there is a connection between the Lockwood and Plummer families. She had once been in love with Dexter’s grandfather but eventually married Maurice Plummer instead. Helen, Ralph’s wife and company secretary, confesses that she has been in touch with Dexter about getting a takeover.

In the end Barnaby deduces that Helen and Ralph killed Dexter. Whilst the Pickle factory was not a major asset, land nearby the Plummer family home had got planning permission and was worth a fortune. Dexter had rumbled Helen’s plans to get hold of the land and had to be killed before he could tell Ralph.
