This temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Penang city. Founded in 1833, and renovated several times since then, it is now a busy religious centre and a tourist attraction. I visited at night, while a religious celebration was underway, as such I could not enter. The streets were filled with music and the noisy sounds of people.

At the main entrance is a tourist sign, which gives a brief history of the temple.

Tourism sign:
The Sri Mahamariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in the George Town World Heritage Site. It was built in 1833, with a prominent dome and entrance tower. It is one of the starting points for the procession of kavadi-carriers during the annual Thaipusam festival.
