A plaque at this sculpture reads:
"DESDE EL 20 DE DECIEMBRE DE 1965 MAZATLAN Y SUS VISITANTES DISFRUTAN DE "LAS PULMONIAS" SIN TENER QUE TOMAR JARABES EXPECTORANTES DESPUES DEL PASEO GRACIAS AL SINGULAR MEDIO DE TRANSPORTE CREADO POR DON MIGUEL RAMIREZ URQUIJO
MAZATLAN, SIN., ENERO DEL ANO 2001"
which Google curiously translates into in English as:
"Since 20 DECEMBER 1965 AND VISITORS MAZATLAN enjoy "Las Pulmonias" without taking expectorant cough syrups THANKS TO WALK AFTER TRANSPORT SINGULAR CREATED BY DON MIGUEL RAMIREZ URQUIJO
Mazatlan, Sin., January 2001"
Another plaque suggests..although it doesn't really explain, that the monument commemortaes the Mazatlan Marathon...sponsored by the Pacifico beer company.
The life-sized sculpture is made of metal (steel or bronze) and depicts Mazatlan's unique taxis that resemble golf carts. Behind the "pulmonia" is the depiction of a mountain with a lighthouse on top..likely intended to represent the lighthouse (or "faro") about 2 miles south of here. The back of the "mountain" also has depictions of a naked woman, with a deer (the symbol of Mazatlan), palm trees, sealife and another pulmonia.
Unfortunately, the plaques here do not reveal the name of the artist.
