It has a large auditorium and foyer with a seating capacity of 700. It is used as a venue for national and international productions of contemporary dance, plays and concerts.

The Brussels architect Gustave Saintenoy designed the theatre in 1865 with sober neoclassical façades and a rich, eclectic interior and is horseshoe-shaped. The Ceilings, boxes and balconies are richly decorated by the Brussels painter C. Braeckman. There is also a fantastic fairytale chandelier, with 204 lights which was made in Berlin.

In 1969, 100 years after it was built, the theatre was awarded the honour of prefixing the theatre name with ‘Koninklijke’ (in English ‘Royal’).

In front of the theatre there is a statue of Papageno, the bird catcher character in the Mozart’s opera ‘The Magic Flute’.

There are daily guided tours of the theatre at 10h, 12h, 13h and 16h30 with additional tours that also go behind the scenes at 11h and 15h.

The co-ordinates were taken at the main entrance to the theatre.
