From Wikipedia: "Lawrence George Durrell (February 27, 1912 – November 7, 1990), was an expatriate British novelist, poet, dramatist, and travel writer, though he resisted affiliation with Britain and preferred to be considered cosmopolitan. [...] His most famous work is the tetralogy the Alexandria Quartet."
He lived with his family on the Greek island Corfu from 1935 until the fall of Greece in 1941 when he escaped to Egypt.
The monument is a life-size relief bust located in a sideway of the municipal park of Kerkyra. It is only a few steps away from a very similar monument for his brother Gerald.
The inscription says:
"LAWRENCE DURELL 1912-1990
Greece is the country that offers you the discovery of yourself...
Η Ελλάδα σου προσφέρει την δυνατότητα να ανακαλύψεις τον εαυτό σου..."
The quote is shortened from 'Prospero's Cell' (1945). The original reads: "Other countries may offer you discoveries in manners or lore or landscape. Greece offers you something harder – the discovery of yourself."
