Spianada is located between the city and the Old Fortress of Corfu. It is said to be the largest square in Greece (or even south-eastern Europe). The area used to be a part of the fortification, it was necessary to have vacant area between the city and the castle. It was finally shaped in 1628 by the Venetians, the name originates from the Italian word "spianare" that means "to flatten".

Today the park is a popular place for tourists and residents. Especially the southern part with a lot of trees and monuments. The northern half is unfortunately partially used as a parking, but also has Greece's only official cricket playing field and there is a nice playground in the northeast corner.
