The history of theater in modern Corfu (not to speak of Ancient Greek times) dates back to 1663. The last municipal theater was destroyed by German bombs in 1943; 1952 the ruins were completely demolished. In the early 1960s the municipal council decided to allocate 8,000,000 drachma, which represented the proceeds from the sale of a municipal power station, for the construction of the new municipal theater. The local architect Pericles Sakelarios did the design and planning free of charge.

But the financial situation was difficult and there was not much support for the "modern" style of the building in major parts of the population. The planned construction period of two years grew to over 18, until the new theater was finally opened in 1981.

The property houses a 17 meter deep stage, a hall with 850 seats, foyer, bar and separate lecture and concert hall. The arcades around the building contain 18 shops.
