The dome of the ANZAC War Memorial rises 26 meters from the floor. On the dome are some 120,000 gold stars representing the 120,000 men and women from New South Wales that enlisted for service in World War I. The memorial was constructed between 1932 and 1934. With the onset of the Great Depression funding for the memorial ran short, a decision was made to "sell" each star for 2 shillings (20 cents) to raise money to complete the memorial. Not all stars were sold however enough were sold to fund the completion of the memorial. The stars are plaster painted with gold paint. It is not known why the stars are more concentrated near the center of the dome.
