The Bruges music conservatory was established in 1847 as a music school. The Orgelzaal (Organ Hall) was built in 1888 and the bust of Marc Houterman was placed above the doorway.

Marc Houterman was born in Bruges in 1537 and died in 1577.

Although only 40 when he died he had risen to become the organist as St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
