The Parliament house of Singapore is located in the Civic District of the Downtown Core within Singapore's central business district, on the Singapore River, surrounded by other civic buildings. This is the new building, which became operational in 1999, after a decade long process of design and construction. The former is nearby. The new Parliament House was designed with state of the art technology, and took note of other Parliament buildings in Europe and Australia. The Parliament has a well designed website, and there is even an iphone app.

As far as I can gather, the building is open to the public during sitting times, at various other times, and to organised tour groups. There are no set times. Respectable attire is mandatory.

Singapore has had an interesting and varied history. Modern Singapore came into existence in 1819 with Sir Stamford Raffles. For most of the 19th century the British Parliament was ruling authority. Following World War Two Singapore was granted its own Parliament, with limited democratic representation. Self government came into effect in 1959, and in 1965 Singapore became fully independent.

Since independence the People's Action Party (PAP), under the leadership of Lee Kuan Yew, has been the dominant party. The size of the Parliament has gradually increased and become increasingly democratic. At the current time there are 99 MPs, 87 of which are elected.
