In the Christian religion Joseph is regarded as the guardian of the infant Jesus, standing in the position as a father to the young boy. He held this duty as he was husband to the mother of Jesus, Mary. He was one of the three members of the Holy Family. Joseph lived during the early period of the Roman Empire in the Kingdom and then province of Judea.
This life-sized statue of St. Joseph stands above the main entrance to the now Singapore Art Museum, but originally, the building was the St Joseph Institution. Joseph is dressed in modern priest-like garments, has one hand pointing outwards into the street, with two children dressed in somewhat upper-class garb flanking him. I suspect that the statues are constructed with bronze.
Beneath the statue is a small plaque (in gallery) that states:
PRESENTED BY
J. LA SALJE ESQ
1913
As the building dates to 1852 the statue was apparently a later edition. The statue is visible from the street.
