The Singapore Art Museum is located a little way from the centre of the city of Sing, and near the exciting Little India district. The museum is housed in an attractive colonial era building. Associated with the museum are several pieces of public art in the grounds.
The Museum houses the national art collection of Singapore, which is a collection of near eight thousand pieces of Singaporean and Southeast Asian art. The emphasis of the collection is on modern and contemporary art. Unfortunately, when I visited recently (Oct 2012) the Museum was closed (looked like an event being filmed), however, I have visited the museum previously. A no photo policy exists.
The Museum displays a wide variety of artwork, sculpture, paintings, and statuary. There are also frequent visiting exhibits from Asia, Europe and America. The Museum is also open to private functions from time to time.
The Singapore Art Museum is a public institution, operating under the National Heritage Board. According to an historical plaque inside the main entrance the building was designed by a Catholic brother, brother Lothaire, a French priest-architect, and completed in 1867. The site had previously been the first Catholic chapel of Singapore. The Institute closed in 1987. The Museum opened in 1996. There are a variety of other cultural sites in the vicinity.
