The history of Eira begins in early 20th century. Originally it was considered to be too far from centre and planned for industrial use. However, rapid growth of Helsinki changed design in favour of residential area.
First villas were built before World War I in Jugend (Art Nouveau) style. After the war building style took a turn towards Neoclassicism but the change is unnoticeable except for the most experienced observer.
Name "Eira" comes from nearby Eira hospital that was built in neighbouring suburb of Ullanlinna shortly before construction in Eira area began. Hospital in turn derived its name from Eir - The old Scandinavian goddess of medical knowledge.
Roughly 1000 people live in Eira today. Several countries also have their embassies there. E.g. Czech Republic, Latvia and Norway.
Eira is also listed in Finnish version of monopoly game. Appropriately one of the most expensive locations.

If you chose 'Other' above, please explain why.: Some colors were altered in the print I used to play in my childhood. Eira corresponds to Nth Caroline Avenue in US edition, BUT it was printed in yellow.
