Circle of Peace

Inspired by Peacemaker Nicholas Roerich’s “Banner of Peace,” and designed by children attending Sanfordville Elementary, this stonewall evokes the ancient symbol of our past, present, and future enclosed in the larger ring of eternity.

The circle welcomes the world from each of the cardinal directions.

The rock represents permanence, strength, and our planet.

The water flowing over the stones represents purity, fertility and the source of all life.

Each of the small stones in the three shallow pools memorializes victims of violence, especially those who lost their lives on 09/11/2001.

The White Pine recalls the ‘Great Tree of Peace’ of Oneida Peacemaker, Deganawida, who asked that every Eastern Woodland tribe “bury their weapons of war under its sacred roots and never unearth them.”

The tree’s white trunk stands for purity. Its evergreen needles speak of eternity, and its four roots spread to the four directions of Mother Earth.

The pairs of white, red, and black pine trees point toward the 09/11/2001 locations: NY, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C.

The peace pole at the memorial has the six most widely spoken languages in the world. It was purchased by the students in the Sanfordville Care Club.
