In Provincetown, at the corner of Commercial and Ryder Streets, is Cabot's Candy of Cape Cod which has taffy pulling machine in the corner of the building such that people outside could see the process of making salt water taffy.
Cabot's Candy of Cape Cod is located across the street from the Provincetown Town Hall and is in a central location in the commerical downtown district of the town. It is in a two-story building that has a peaked roof. The floor is elevated compared to the road, so you have to walk up a few steps to get in. The web site has a photo that shows a promotional sign that states that the shop was established in 1927.
As you enter, the salt water taffy display and machines are on your left. What you first see are are several boxes of very colorfully wrapped taffies. According to the web site, over fifty flavors are available, though I don't think that there are fifty at any one time in the store. A portion that was there included: peppermint, rum butter, licorice, pineapple, and chocolate. In addition to the shop here, the candy is sold elsewhere on the Cape.
The machinery was not in operation at the time of the visit. In fact, since it was Columbus Day weekend, it may have been the last weekend that the shop would be open. The web site for the shop also takes online orders.
I believe that there were two machines - a taffy pulling machine and a wrapping machine. I did not get a shot of any plates on the machine that would have identified the manufacturer. The wrapping machine came from Package Machinery Company of Springfield, MA.
In addition to salt water taffy, the shop makes fudge, brittle, nougats and other candy, as well as some baked goods.
