Willebrord Snel van Royen, better known by his Latin name Snellius, was a Dutch mathematician, physicist and astronomer. He was from 1613 to 1626 professor at the University of Leiden. He is mainly known for the law of refraction of light, but has also made an important contribution to the land surveying. In 1615 he devised a new method to calculate the circumference of the earth using triangulation.
