These fishermen represent the link with the coast that Bruges has enjoyed for a long time, and Zeebrugge's importance as a fishing port.

‘t Zand is the largest public square in Bruges. It is situated where the old railway station used to be. It is used as an open air market at weekends and as a venue as an open air concert site.
In the middle of the square is this large fountain with 4 separate sculptures by the husband and wife sculptors Stefaan De Puydt and Livia Canestraro.
This sculpture shows 3 fishermen. One of them is holding a swordfish, another is dressed in a Sou’wester holding a gaff and the other is facing away from them. Above their heads are circling gulls, waiting to pick up any fish that may be thrown away.
At its height Bruges was a major trading city and the canals linking the coast to the city meant that this inland city has for many years had connections with the sea and the coast.
The Flemish name for Bruges is Brugge and it is connected by a 7.5 mile canal to the port of Zeebrugge (Bruges by the sea). According to its tourism
website “Zeebrugge is the most important Belgian fishing port.The Zeebrugge wholesale fish market, installed in a modern complex in the inner port,is one of the largest and most sophisticated of its kind in Europe. Zeebrugge also has an attractive marina which can accommodate some 100 vessels.”
