"The beginnings of the museum and organized local-history work in Frenštát pod Radhoštem are connected with that favorable period in the 2nd half of the 19th century when the atmosphere of Frenštát‘s society took on distinctive contours and its steps into the upcoming century were pre-determined. In Frenštát, the efforts to create a national consciousness were supported by the Citizens‘ Club, and in its patriotic and cultural milieu, a number of associations were founded and many activities were initiated.

Among them were the founding of the Ethnogrphic Section and the organizing of an ethnographic exhibition in Frenštát in 1893, as well as the participation of the region in the Czech-Slavic Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague in 1895. The fulfilment of the legacy of those years of active organizational and local-history work, above all by Jirí Felix, the initiator of local-history activities, wasn’t able to be realized until 1951 when the Municipal Museum was opened in a building on Upper Street, not far from the building of the present museum.

A further chapter in the museum’s history is connected with the town-hall building where the museum was located from 1959 to 2002. In 1965, the Municipal Museum became an affiliate of the Ethnographic Institute, today the Novojicínska Museum.

The year 2002 was a milestone in the museum’s history when the museum left the premises of the town hall and at no cost from the town council, received one of the architecturally predominate points of the town, the so-called Boys‘ Elementary School from the year 1876. Within the scope of the project Reconstruction and Renewal of the Museum in Frenštát pod Radhoštem, which is financed from the Fonds of the European Union and by supporters of the Moravian-Silesion Regional Museum, it was made possible to reconstruct the building and to install new expositions. Thus the museum could be reopened to the public on June 16, 2007.

Altogether, the project offers visitors nine expositions on the separate floors and three exhibition rooms on the ground floor for short exhibits of the museum and gallery kind with the possibility of lectures and audiovisual programs in exhibition room No. III. Audiovisual projection accompanies most of the expositions and interactive elements are included.

The museum provides likewise indispensable services for visitors – the sale of publications and souvenirs at the cashier’s desk, information and guide service and a study room for researchers on the building’s ground floor. The whole building is constructed without barriers and there is an elevator."
