Known by several names Phu Ðong Thien Vuong is a mythical hero from Vietnam's long history. The story, in short, is that the gentleman concerned grows into a giant acquires a flying horse, and defeats invaders of Vietnam. He has been the subject of several literary poems, plus children's stories, also a movie or three.

The statue is on a tall plinth, in the centre of a busy traffic intersection in central Ho Chi Minh City. The statue looks to be larger than life-sized, but it is difficult to judge accurately. Phu Ðong Thien Vuong rides his horse, holding a rather flexible spear, with the horse leaping forward into the sky, not doubt to battle his enemies. His name is engraved on the base of the plinth.
