This is a historic salt works, active in late 1805/early 1806. The Lewis & Clark expedition, even before reaching the Pacific Ocean, had run out of salt. For the return journey eastward, they ordered their party to haul buckets of seawater to this location where they boiled the water day and night until they accumulated enough salt to allow them to return home. This site is now part of Lewis & Clark National Historic Park.
