Bruges is one of the best preserved Medieval cities in Europe. It manages to maintain its historical architecture whilst at the same time keeping up to date with the modern world and has many modern sculptures.
Papageno is a bird catcher in Mozart’s opera and he uses his pan pipes to charm the birds. In the opera he wears a costume made from bird feathers and carries a bird cage on his back.
In this statue his costume has a birds head and wings, and his bird cage is a small hand held version that is holding 3 captured birds.
This bronze statue was sculpted by the Belgian artist Jef Claerhout.
