Following the defeat of the Japanese in World War Two a rather disparate group of interested parties fought for control of Vietnam. These included the former French colonial rulers, the Vietnamese communist party, non-communist Vietnamese, the British, and even Chiang Kai-shek, plus lots of smaller groups and international interests. Putting aside the death and destruction, an interesting time.

In 6th January 1946 national parliamentary elections were held in Vietnam to elect a national government. The Viet Minh (the communist party) won a majority of seats (182/302). Amidst allegations of fraud this election result quickly led to conflict between most of the factions concerned. In turn, this led to the Vietnam/American War (as the Vietnamese refer to the conflict), and the rest, as they say, is history.

In central Hanoi is a memorial with the inscription (google translate): "HANOI - Hang Dau Park. Decision object element for the country of birth", and (on the opposite side) "Hanoi 1946". I was told that this statue is dedicated to the struggle independence and the national election of 1946.

The memorial consists of a tall, central divider, upon which the inscriptions are inscribed. On one side is a single soldier, striding forward purposefully. On the other side two people, one a soldier kneeling, holding a weapon, the second, a women standing holding a sword aloft. Larger than life-sized. The entire memorial is grey stone. The memorial is the central feature of Hang Dau park.
