Years ago, there was an active rail line here. These old tanker cars are artifacts of that history, and this sign provides some details.

This sign is located just off of Brackley Point Road, and adjacent Sherwood Cemetery, on the Confederation Trail, which is on land where the old Prince Edward Island Railway used to be located.

The text on the sign reads:

"Railway Tanker Cars

There are only six railway cars remaining in Prince Edward Island adjacent to the Confederation Trail, one in Wellington, one in Borden-Carleton, two in Kinsington, and two in Charlottetown. The latter are smaller-size tanker cars, painted blue. Located behind Matheson Construction Ltd in the Sherwood Industrial Park.

They were moved to Sherwood from Port Borden in late 1989. They represent the last delivery that CN Railways made to a siding behind Matheson Contstruction, which regularly took delivery of liquid asphalt from Quebec. The cars had been used to store waste oil from CN Marine ferries until the railway abandoned the province at the end of that year. Matheson Construction brought them to remove the ends and convert to a smoke stack for an asphalt plant but another option was found. Instead, the old cars, coupled together, have rested there on their rails ever since as an interesting relic of the railways era."

................

If you visit here in the summer, the lush vegetation and shrubs will nearly conceal the tanker cars, but glimpses of their blue paint look out of place and give their location away. A narrow path has been beaten into the grass here, from hikers and walkers on the trail that deviated from Confederation Trail to get a peek at the old cars.
