The Spencer Shops, constructed in 1896, features a massive roundhouse built in 1924. It was one of hundreds of railroad back shops that dotted the American landscape during the heyday of steam travel in the mid-nineteenth century and into the turn of the twentieth century. The original facility included a semicircular roundhouse with 15 bays. The 37-bay roundhouse, one of the largest ever constructed, is one of the few roundhouses remaining in the country.

The roundhouse and turntable are currently in use as part of the N.C. Transportation Museum.
