In 1915, Olaf Skalsien was appointed as leader of housing constructions at the newly built Dovre railroad. He became interested in experiments with shale, the most common local stone, and in 1917 he started employing new methods of shale splitting, which enabled new uses of shale in the construction industry. In 1937 he initialized construction of aerial lift in Sæterlia by which the shale was transported from mountain quarries to the railroad.

The monument was built by the local Rotary International club. It is a shale block with a portrait of Olaf Skaslien and inscription
