The Upper Mississippi River lock and dam system was build primarily to assist barge navigation on the river. Water behind the dams is released to provide a minimum depth of 9 feet in the main channel. It also provided a system to get over areas of rapids.
The water above this lock & dam spreads out into a 3 mile wide lake. This lake is the widest spot in the Mississippi River system with the exception of one place in Lousiana, nearly 1000 river miles down stream. Construction of most of the 29 locks and dams was completed by 1940. This lock usually is closed for the winter and maintinance from Mid-December to Mid-March.
The over-look at this lock is a great place to view Bald Eagles in the winter as they feed around the open water below the dam. As many as 100 or more eagles can be seen at one time.
