Te Sustrans webiste [visit link] tells us about Route 21:

"National Route 21 of The National Cycle Network runs south from Greenwich out of London through Lewisham (the Waterlink Way) to Crawley, and then via East Grinstead and Eridge to Heathfield and Eastbourne.

Open Sections: The route is open and signed as the Downs and Weald cycle route and is also part of the proposed Avenue Verte Greenway linking London and Paris via the Newhaven to Dieppe ferry. Visit the Franco British Cycle Plan website for further information on this route."

This type of mile marker is one of four types designed for the millennium. This one is by John Mills and the Sustrans website [visit link] tells us:

"There are four different types of Millennium Mileposts. The first post to be commissioned was designed by John Mills, and his piece was entitled The Fossil Tree. The post takes the form of an abstract tree with relief imagery of fossils depicting the passage of time from early primitive creatures to the ultimate demise of fossil fuel driven technology."

The Sustrans website [visit link] also tells us about the numbering system:

"The National Cycle Network is signed using a system modelled on the Danish Cycle Network and adopted by the Department for Transport, the Scottish Government, the Welsh Assembly and the Northern Ireland Executive. The same system is now being adopted by a number of other European countries.

The signs show the number of the route that is being followed: National Route numbers are shown against a red patch and Regional Route numbers are shown against a blue patch."
