Velehrad - one of the most important pilgrimage place in the Czech Republic - is closely associated with St.Cyril and St.Methodius (10th century). They brought during their mission to Morava Christian faith, culture and Cyrilic alphabet.
The early medieval Cistercian abbey was founded in 1205. Today the monastery with the Basilica of Assumption of Mary and St. Cyrillus and Methodius is a large Baroque complex with remains of Romanesque-Gothic buildings. On occasion of anniversary of 1100 years of holy Cyril and Method death, in the year 1985, Pope John Paul II paid for basilica the golden rose. This meaningful compliment obtained only a few Christian cathedrals in the world. Pope John Paul II., head of Roman Catholic Kirk, visited basilica of the day 22. April 1990. The colossal cross with his Coat of Arms stands on the courtyard situated in front of the basilica like the memory on this event.
