McKay Station is a hydroelectric power station located on the West Branch of the Penobscot River. Construction started in 1951 and was completed in 1953. The station was a retrofit of Ripogenus Dam, which is located 3000 feet upstream and was originally constructed in 1920. Water for power generation flows through a large tunnel bored though solid rock starting at the dam upstream and ending at the powerhouse.
Originally the station produced 40Hz electricity for local pulp and paper mills. From 1997 to 2001, major upgrades were carried out on the station, which included replacing all three runners and converting the station from 40Hz generation to the standard 60Hz generation.
