The Laura A. Barnes was a 120-foot wooden four-masted Schooner out of Camden, Maine. In 1918 she set sail from New York heading to South Carolina. She foundered in a dense fog in the Outer Banks during a Nor'easter on June 1st, 1921. The entire crew was rescued by the men at the Bodie Island Coast Guard Station. She sat on the beach for many years until the National Park Service moved her a Mile South in 1973 to her present location on Coquina Beach on Highway 12, across from the Bodie Island Lighthouse.
Over the years various storms and Hurricanes have broken up parts of the ship. The constantly shifting sands from storms and winds have covered and uncovered the ship multiple times. What you see today might be covered next year, or next year even more might be uncovered. The shipwreck used to be roped-off and information placards around her, but the National Park Service has given up due to the storms and Hurricanes, and currently a picket-fence surrounds her.
