António Aleixo had a difficult life and was one of the rare widely accepted poets who had no education at all. Whatever he knew about writing he learned himself.

He was builder helper, police officer. He lived in Portugal, then in France. Upon his return to Portugal he established himself in Loulé where he died of a tuberculosis in 1949.

He was probably a customer of this cafe where now this statue stands. At least the cafe was definitely active when António Aleixo lived in Loulé.

His grandson still lives in the town, where he owns a bookstore and was the mayor some years ago.
