This column is located in front of the parish church of Brissago and commemorates the independence of the canton Ticino. The column was originally erected in 1903 for the centennial. It might be an ancient Roman find (I could not find any documentation, but I have come across a few similar examples where this was the case). It has a height of about 6 meters including the base, the column itself something over 3 meters.

The plaque reads:
"1803-1903
I Brissaghesi
riuniti concordi e festanti
a commemorare
il primo centenario
dell'autonomia Ticinese
bene auspicando
per i liberi destini della patria
questo ricordo inaugurano
add IXX settembre
MCMIII"

English: "1803-1903
The citizens of Brissago
united and celebrating
to commemorate
the centenary
of the independence of Ticino
in good hope
for a free destiny of their country
inaugurated this memorial
September 19th 1903".

One hundred years later a second plaque was added below. The text:
"1803-2003
La communità Brissaghese
riconoscente
commemora
il secondo centenario
dell'autonomia Ticinese
19 febbraio 2003"

English: "1803-2003
The community of Brissago
gratefully
commemorates
the second centenary
of the independence of Ticino
February 19, 2003"
Type of Column: Corinthian

Location: Churchyard
