This building orginally housed the Miner County Bank, O M Christopherson Dentist Office, and an insurance agency.

The Miner County Bank was organized in 1926 as a result of two failed banks: The First National Bank of Howard and the Peoples State Bank. In 1948, A.S. (Art) Thompson acquired controlling interest in the Miner County Bank. Art was elected President of the bank, replacing O.J. Boos. Art’s son, R.H. (Bob) Thompson, started working for the bank in late 1949. Bob’s wife, Ellen Marie (Spec) Thompson joined the bank staff in 1953. When Art passed away in 1965, Bob was elected President and Spec was elected Vice President. In 1975, R.K. Kent Thompson (Bob and Spec’s son) moved back to Howard to work at the bank. Spec was elected President and Kent Vice President, when Bob passed away in 1984. Kent was elected President in 1993, becoming the third generation of the Thompson family to hold this position.

From its original location, one block north, the bank moved to its current office in 1975. Previous occupants of this location were Tripp’s Ford Dealership and Garage and Rasmussen Implement. Several remodeling projects have been completed; adding a board room, additional offices and a drive-up window.

On January 1, 1995, the Miner County Bank expanded it’s operation by purchasing the Canova Branch of the Security State Bank. The Security State Bank was organized in 1921 (90 years ago) replacing the failed Peoples State Bank. With this acquisition, the bank’s assets exceeded $20,000,000 and have now grown to more than $37,000,000. The Thompson family had previously held some ownership in the Security State Bank, having disposed of that interest in 1980.
