Faro was recognized as a town by the kinf Afonso III in 1266 and it was by then that the first "town hall" was built. It's highly probable that the 13th century administrative building existed right where the modern city hall stands now. We know it was within the walls, as the current one is, and the location continuity has high odds. This is at least the official thesis.
In the 19th Century the city hall was definitely in the current spot. By then the municipality felt the need of expanding the building but there was no space. So some of the surrounding houses were bought and attached to the main building. These works started in 1883 and took decades.
Finally, in 1945, with a project of the architect Jorge Oliveira, the facade of the main building was renovated.
Faro municipality has six parishes:
Conceição
Estoi
Montenegro
Santa Bárbara de Nexe
São Pedro
Sé
The last two of the list cover the town of Faro, the otehrs are mostly rural.
