Lake Hallwil is located in the southern part of the canton Aargau at the border to Luzern. It is a popular destination for day trips and water sports, mainly sailing. Surprisingly, the municipality of Hallwil does not share any part of the shore line and is about two kilometers north of the lake.
It is ranked 16 by size in Switzerland and one of the few larger lakes where the largest part of the shoreline are accessible by the public. A hike around the lake can be done in less than 5 hours. In the summer season there is regular tourist ship traffic around the lake.
Lake Hallwil is surrounded by mainly agricultural area. The pollution by fertilizer residues had turned the lake almost dead by 1980. Since 1985 the lake has been ventilated and oxygen added. This and the stronger phosphate limits have turned the lake back to a healthy condition. The phosphate concentration was lowered from 250 mg/l back to 30 mg/l.
