Das Willkommensschild zeigt zwei Bäckerburschen mit dem Motto "Stadt des Zwiebacks", das Stadtwappen und den Namen der Stadt.
Zwieback (aus dem Italienischen biscotto, von lateinisch bis coctus [panis], "zweimal gebackenes Brot") ist ein Brot, das zur Haltbarmachung in Scheiben geschnitten und ein zweites Mal gebacken wird, bis es trocken und mürbe ist.
Christoph Stemler übernahm 1788 die Bäckerei seines verstorbenen Bruders in Friedrichsdorf. Das Wissen um die Herstellung des Zwiebacks soll er sich auf holländischen Kriegsschiffen angeeignet haben. Bals darauf stellten auch andere Bäcker in Friedichsdorf Zwieback her, in Dosen verpackt belieferte man sogar den Kaiser in Berlin, ebenso wie den russischen Zarenhof. Friedrichsdorfer Zwieback stand für Qualität und avancierte zu einem frühen Markenbegriff, so daß es sogar zu Produktpiraterie kam. Daher fügten die Friedrichsdorfer Fabrikanten auf der Verpackung das Prädikat "echt" hinzu. Doch mit dem wirtschaftlichen Wohlstand nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg begann der Niedergang der Zwiebackfabriken, in den letzten Jahren mußten auch die beiden verbliebenen Firmen ihre Zwiebackproduktion in Friedrichsdorf einstellen.

Christoph Stemler took over 1788 the bakery of his deceased brother Frederick in Friedrichsdorf. The knowledge about the production of Zwieback he should have acquired on Dutch warships. Soon after other bakers in Friedrichsdorf also produced Zwieback, packed in cans they even supplied the Kaiser in Berlin and Vienna, as well as the Russian Tsar's Court. Friedrichsdorf Zwieback stood for quality and became an early brand name, so that it even came to piracy. Therefore, the Friedrichsdorf manufacturers added the predicate "echt" (= genuine) to the packaging. But with the economic prosperity after the Second World War began the decline of the biscuit factories, in recent years the only two remaining firms had closed their production of Zwieback in Friedrichsdorf.
