Mindaugas (1236-1263) was the first, and the only, King of Lithuania. Mindaugas introduced Christianity to Lithuania in 1251. Mindaugas also united local tribes and various princes into the one state under his power and finally was crowned by the Pope Innocent IV. Mindaugas, as many other rulers of medieval time he was assasinated very young at age only 27 by his political enemies.
The statue from grey granite (its weight is 12 tons) is work of Lithuanian artist Regimantas Midvikis. Mindaugas sits on a throne and keeps an apple and a sceptre, symbols of king's power, in his hands.
