There's a statue of the 'Bremer Stadtmusikanten' (Bremen Town Musicians) well known from the fairy tale of the Brothers Grimm. And there's also some superstition about rubbing the feet of the donkey: This will bring good luck.

The origin of this superstition is unknown. But people do it often. The feet of the donkey are in light color.

The statue was placed there in 1953. It was created by Gerhard Marcks. It is created of bronze.

What's the Real Story?:
Die Ursprünge des Märchens liegen bereits im Mittelalter. Bei allen Fassungen blieb der Kern der Handlung, dass sich die Schwachen ("niedere Tiere", Alte etc.) durch ein solidarisches Handeln erfolgreich gegen die Starken (früher bspw. Wappentiere der Adligen) durchsetzten. Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts haben die Brüder Grimm die Geschichte aufgeschrieben. Offensichtlich beruht diese auf dem Hintergrund, dass seit 1339 die in der Hansestadt bekannten "Stadt- und Raths-Musici" vom Turm der Kirche "Unser Lieben Frauen" bliesen oder bei Festen spielten. Diese "Stadtmusikanten" nahmen - wie im Märchen - immer wieder fahrende Musikanten auf.
