According to information provided by the Achill Tourism group, there is evidence that this area was populated as much as 5,000 years ago. Further archeological evidence indicates the cottages were probably first inhabited in the 12th century. The remains of approximately 100 cottages are still standing. It is believed they were last inhabited in the early 20th century as summer cottages for those herding cattle.
Another plausible theory as the the village's demise is that the tenant farmers were unable to remain during the Potato Famine, or the "Great Hunger" as it is known. This famine decimated the population of Ireland. It is estimated that during this time (between 1845 and 1852) one million people died and another one million people emmigrated from Ireland.
