Located in salt deposits formed 275 million years ago in shallow seas during the Permian Period that are now 650 feet underground. The Carey Salt Company began mining operations here in 1923 using the room and pillar method where pillars of salt are left to support the rocks above as areas of salt are mined.
The mine has grown to encompass more than 920 acres under the east side of Hutchinson, Kansas. The Reno County Historical Society operates the Kansas Underground Salt Mine Museum in a long ago abandoned section of the mine, where elevators in a shaft bored especially for this purpose whisk visitors in and out of the mine. In another nearby unused area of the mine, Underground Vaults & Storage provides 1.7 million sq ft of safe, secure storage for all types of items, and is the largest single storage facility for movie and television film internationally. A display in the museum area shows what the storage facilities look like.
