Een mijlpaal of banpaal gaf vroeger de grens van een stad aan. Deze bevonden zich op één Duitse mijl (ca. 7,4 km) buiten de stadspoorten. Ook gaven deze palen de grens aan voor veroordeelden. Deze zogenaamde bannelingen mochten zich voor een bepaalde tijd niet binnen de stadsgrenzen bevinden.
Deze mijlpaal uit 1624 is één van de zes Amsterdamse mijlpalen en staat op de Spaarndammerdijk tussen het Geuzenbos in het recreatiegebied Spaarnwoude en het nieuwe boezemgemaal van de ringvaart van het Haarlemmermeer. Deze paal heeft op diverse plaatsen in Amsterdam gestaan en is in 2006 weer teruggeplaatst op de oorspronkelijke plaats. De originele sokkel met daarop de tekst "Terminus Proscriptionis, Uyterste paal der Bannelingen" is helaas verdwenen.
Rembrandt heeft deze paal vereeuwigd in een ets in 1650 en hierop is ook de sokkel te zien. Om deze reden wordt deze paal ook wel de Rembrandtpaal genoemd.

A milestone or banningpole was used in early times to indicate the boundary of a city. These were located at one German mile (7,4 km) from the city gates. Also these poles indicated the limits for convicted criminals. These so called bannelingen (exiles) were prohibited access to the city limits during a specific time.
This milestone from 1624 is one of six Amsterdam milestones and is located at the Spaarndammerdijk between the Geuzenbos in the recreational area called Spaarnwoude and the new pumping station of the Haarlemmermeer polder.
This pole was moved back to its original location in 2006. The pedestal with the text "Terminus Proscriptionis, Uyterste paal der Bannelingen" was lost.
Rembrandt made a etching of this milestone in 1650 and on this etch the pedestal can still be seen. For this reason this milestone is also called the Rembrandtpole.
