The Peninsular War
The Peninsular War (between 1807 and 1814), integrating the broadest event of the Napoleonic Wars, comprises those who were known to the French Invasions of Portugal. With the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte to power in 1799, Portugal comes to be seen as strategic territory to the commercial interests of the French, over the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
The Battle of Buçaco
The Battle of Buçaco (or Bussaco, according to the spelling of the time), part of the last of the three Napoleonic invasions of Portugal (beginning in July 1810 and ending in April 1811) was one of the many battles fought between the French and British-Portuguese armies, however, the background relating to their preparation as well as the consequences of a single day of confrontation (September 27, 1810), raise it to an operational plan of massive military concept, not only for what it represents in its more objective terms - the defeat of the brigades of the supreme commander Marshal André Masséna - but mainly for what it represented in the preparation of an ensuing confrontation, which would decide the final weakening of the French invader in the Lines of Torres Vedras.
The Monument
The monument is an obelisk with a star on top, and is surrounded by iron chains, connecting eight pieces of artillery.
