"The Dumfries Town memorial stands outside St John's Church, Lovers Walk, Dumfries. It takes the form of a figure of Scottish soldier in service dress with head bowed and reversed rifle, on square granite monument with a fluted pillar at each corner. There are 216 men listed for World War 1 and 336 for World War 2."

Other soldiers have been since added to the memorial, including one who died in the Korean War in 1952, one who died in the Malaya War in 1952, one who died in the Vietnam War in 1965, and two who died in Afghanistan in 2010.

A news article posted in the Scotsman on July 11, 1922, had this to say about the war memorial: "Dumfries war memorial was unveiled on Sunday by General Sir Francis Davies, K.O.B., the General Officer Commanding the Forces in Scotland. The memorial takes the form of a monument in Creetown grey granite, with the figure of a soldier of the King's Own Scottish Borderers standing with a rifle reversed as if in sorrow at the loss of a comrade. The cost of the memorial was about 1400 pounds. It contains 467 names, including the names of 229 men of the King's Own Scottish Borderers. General Davies, in unveiling the memorial, said that parents should bring their children to see the memorial, and explain to them what a great thing had been done by the men whose names were inscribed on the monument, and who counted as nought the sacrifice they made for King and country. Provost Macaulay, O.B.E., accepted the custody of the memorial on behalf of the Town Council."
