This interactive display was created by the Gardner-Webb University Honors Astronomy class of 2008.

The basic idea is to show the relative distances between the planets.

The Sun, planets, and some of the moons are painted on the sidewalk along South Main Street in Boiling Springs, next to the Gardner-Webb University campus.

The sun is located on the sidewalk at the SW corner of the intersection of Main and Campus. Standing at the sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are clearly visible, all within 30 meters or so of the sun. Neptune, the farthest planet, is located at N35° 14.803 W81° 39.989, over a quarter mile south.

The model demonstrates how the inner planets are MUCH closer together than the outer planets. Visitors are encouraged to walk down the sidewalk to visit each of the planets. I pace-counted to get a better idea of the relative distances.
Scientific Principle(s) being demonstrated:
This display demonstrates the relative distances between the planets in our solar system.

Briefly explain if the experiment was effective for you. Could it have been better?:
It needs to be repainted, and it would be great if there was a scale explaining that 1 meter = X kilometers, or whatever.

When is the apparatus/experiment available to the public:
24/7/365 - it's on a public sidewalk.
