This story begins when the theater was first built by Napoleon Bonaparte Brown, a wealthy local banker. It was said to be the most elegant theatre between Kansas City and Denver, and first Mr. Brown and then his son Earl, took a very hands on approach to the theater, securing the finest acts and troupes to play there. Under Earl's hand the theater thrived as never before. Then, in 1911 while returning from Europe on a passenger liner, Earl suddenly died. From that moment on the theater went into decline and never again reached the grandeur it had attained under Earl's guiding hand.

If you take a tour of the theater you will hear about Earl being seen in the balcony, dressed in his finest. Whenever things go wrong in the theater, a light found on in the morning, for example, it is attributed to Earl. During the restoration of the building nails were sometimes found in the walls at odd places, while other report having heard voices.

The Wikipedia entry states: "During the next four years, the theater prospered until 1910, when N.B. Brown died. Four months later, his popular son Earl died. According to theater lore, Earl's ghost haunts the theater, especially during the "opening" season."

Kansas State Representative, Elaine Bowers, has a post on her website about the happenings at the Brown Grand and discussing the Wichita Paranormal Research Society's report on their research at the Brown Grand conducted in 2009.

Some of what they reported was:

"1. While walking on the catwalk backstage Ted and I thought we saw a shadow of a person walk on stage into a room...maybe the electrical room towards the front of the stage on the left...if you are facing the stage. I thought it was one of us...but it wasn't. Not caught on video.

2. While standing on stage towards the back I thought I saw a shadow of a person up in the balcony on the right...if you are standing on stage...right where you (the Brown Grand) had prior claims...thought it was one of us...found out it was not.

3. While investigating up on the catwalk with Shaun (another investigator) we kept hearing voices but we were unable to identify where they were coming from. Sounded Female...not sure." Source
